We are the Business Intelligence Department of Glendale Adventist Medical Center, located in Glendale, CA. With a core team of one ETL Developer, one Decision Support Analyst, and a Director our goal is to covert data to knowledge by curating data, teaching data science skills, and deploying data analytic tools to the business.

Team:

  • Judson Howe, CPA - Director BI
    • An accountant by trade. Upon getting frustrated with non-reconciling data, slow data request processing, and stale spreadsheets he went on a journey to automate, centralize, and empower.
  • Daychar (DJ) Petcharamuk - Engineer (at #tcc14)
    • DJ a is graphic designer turned network engineer/etl developer/javascript ninja. When it comes to making the impossible happen, DJ is your guy. He invents all the ETL transformations and optimize our databases. He also makes a mean data visualization.
  • Kourtney Shoemaker - Data Viz Developer (at #tcc14)
    • An accounting graduate of Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska, we discovered her during her fateful finance internship with the hospital. Upon finding her talents being wasted on debits and credits we rescued her and turned her into a data visualization expert. She has read every single Stephen Few and Edward Tufte book she can find. She is the cornerstone of our department and she has amazed us in her first year with us.
  • Friends:
    • Nicole Webb - Human Resources (at #tcc14)
      • If you ever want to get "re-excited" about Tableau, she is your person. In less than 5 months she has re-invented the way human resources processes data.
    • Andrew Ionata - Human Resources (at #tcc14)
      • Develops ETL feeds custom for the human resources. The fastest data querier in Los Angeles.

Stack:

  • Tableau Enterprise License (8-core)
  • Tableau Desktop (32 Licenses)
  • Pentaho Data Integration (PDI)
  • Informatica ETL
  • PostgreSQL
  • Oracle

History:

In 2012 we downloaded a trial of Tableau Desktop. Upon visually displaying that high lengths of stay correlate to lower patient satisfaction, the CIO and CFOs were hooked. Since then we incrementally scaled up to an 8 core Tableau Server License and 32 desktop users. And deployed over 300 workbooks in Financial, Operational, and Clinical arenas.
